Future of Journalism: Death or Reincarnation?

Print journalism is on the wane, as most of us realize. But that doesn’t mean that digital media can’t continue traditions of professional journalism, according to Mark Mayfield, associate director of student media at the University of Alabama. Mayfield spoke at the Feb. 9 AMP meeting at the Homewood Library.

Although the preferred media may have changed from print to digital format, there’s one thing that hasn’t changed, Mayfield said. That’s the need for talented writers and reporters who are true professionals. The old medium may be dying, but it’s being reincarnated through different media by those who don’t want to see truth die along with it.

Our meetings are usually the 2nd Thursday of the month at the Homewood Library at 11:30. We have a section where Alabama's communications/media professionals can see our future meetings.

We have meetings on the second Thursday in January, February, May, June, July, August, September, and November. During these meetings, we hear from renowned industry experts who provide helpful information and skills training. Monthly meetings also provide networking opportunities and encouragement from others in the communications field.

AMP Members can attend monthly meetings for free. Non-members can attend for a fee of $5. In April, we have our annual Communications Contest Awards Banquet where our communications contest winners are announced, our Communicator of Achievement is recognized and new officers are installed.

In October and March, we hold intensive professional-development workshops. In December we host a holiday party.
