Alabama Media Professionals’ News Literacy Committee led its most recent event for the public on March 18 at Hoover Public Library.

AMP partnered with the library and the News Literacy Project to produce "Fact or Fake: Distinguishing News from Misinformation." Approximately 45 people attended the interactive program, which featured AMP members guiding participants in verifying the accuracy of content and spotting misinformation using News Literacy Project tools.

Alee Quick, director of community engagement for The News Literacy Project, introduced that organization, which is a world leader in promoting news-literacy awareness, and its free educational resources.

AMP News Literacy Committee members Clay Carey, Elaine Hobson Miller and Olivia McMurrey led the program and directed a lively discussion. Photos from this event available by clicking here.

We have meetings on the second Thursday in January, February, May, June, July, August, September, and November. During these meetings, we hear from renowned industry experts who provide helpful information and skills training. Monthly meetings also provide networking opportunities and encouragement from others in the communications field.

AMP Members can attend monthly meetings for free. Non-members can attend for a fee of $5. In April, we have our annual Communications Contest Awards Banquet where our communications contest winners are announced, our Communicator of Achievement is recognized and new officers are installed.

In October and March, we hold intensive professional-development workshops. In December we host a holiday party.
